Amanda with Doll, 1973
Oil on Canvas, 94x71cms

This painting of his five-year old daughter, Amanda, demonstrates how Cyril Mann increasingly prioritised the effects of dynamic light over subject matter.

The bright sun bounces off the child's face, distorting her features.

Working without preliminary sketches and at great speed, the artist had acquired great technical skill after painting for nearly half a century.

Note how the child's hands are rendered in a few brush strokes.
